British Values

At Thornhill Primary School we provide our children with a broad and balanced curriculum. As part of this we actively develop our pupil’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) understanding – in line with the requirements of section 78 of the Education Act 2002.

Embedded within this is the active promotion of the fundamental British values, which include;

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs

Within our school we seek every opportunity, both planned and incidental, to promote these values. Promoting British values is part of our school ethos; it underpins every aspect of school life from collective worship, to developing effective relationships, behaviour policies and curriculum plans which inform activities both within and beyond the classroom. Below is an outline of some of the planned ways in which British Values are promoted within the subjects at Thornhill Primary however as stated many  incidental opportunities are taken to foster and develop understanding and the creation of sustained positive attitudes in our children.
