School Admissions

We are a primary school with children from 4 + to 11 years of age.

If you are considering our school for your child and would like to visit the school please call in or telephone us to make an appointment. We are always pleased to meet parents and discuss the school with you.

The Local Authority is responsible for administering all admissions to primary school. Parents wanting a place for their child at our school need to complete the local authority admission preference form and return this to Durham County Council by the deadline given, which is usually the towards the end of the Autumn Term in the academic year before their child is due to start school.

The admission preference form is contained within the Local Authority Primary Education publication. We do keep a list of parents who wish to have one of these documents sent to them and it is advisable to ensure that we have your details for this purpose.

Should the admissions limit for each year group be exceeded then the Local Authority, in consultation with the Governing Body will admit pupils to the school using set criteria as advised by the Local Authority. Further information can be obtained from the Durham County Council publication “Primary Education”.

Inclusion is a very important aspect of our school ethos and we ensure that all children have access to our school, irrespective of disabilities. The school has an accessibility plan in place covering future policies for increasing access to our school for children who may have disabilities.

Visit the Durham County Council website for information regarding the school admission process and primary school admissions.

To appeal against an admission decision visit: School admissions-appeals.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Thornhill Primary School prides itself on being inclusive for pupils of all abilities including children with SEND.

Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (or Statement of Special Education Needs) follow a different admission and transfer process for a new school.  Please continue to complete Durham County Council’s parental preference form, as part of the admission process to a new school.  You continue to have a right to request a particular school and this will be considered alongside the information that we have about your child’s special educational needs.  The information would have been provided as part of the Education, Health and Care assessment or following the review meeting.

Al our policies can be found in Policies

If you need any further information or advice we will endeavour to help you wherever we can – please contact the school.
